Mission

The Venice Centre for Climate Studies (VICCS) is an inter-disciplinary research centre based at the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, focusing on the assessment, detection, quantification, communication and facilitation of sustainable solutions to global change problems.

primary aim of the VICCS is to integrate social, economic and environmental dimensions (the triple bottom lines of sustainable development) with the institutional dimension to answer questions related to climate change. This long-standing goal is manifested in VICCS, where faculty with a spectrum of skills analyse a range of topics: environmental economics, resources management, adaptation and mitigation policy, risk analysis, paleoclimatology, renewable energies, and cultural heritage protection and valorisation.

Its mission is to investigate and model the feedbacks between society and the climate system, and provide reliable, rigorous, and timely scientific results to help develop climate change adaptation and mitigation policies. It is a hub of interdisciplinary research, with a focus on the science-policy interface and the relationships between research and business.

VICCS serves as a nexus for different university departments and associated institutions active in the field around the Venice area. Within the University Ca’ Foscari, the Departments of Environmental Sciences Informatics and Statistics and Economics. Associated institutions are so far the Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change, the Institute for the Dynamics of Environmental Processes of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR-IDPA), the FEEM Foundation (Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei), the Istituto Nazionale di Economia Agraria (INEA).

Education and training

VICCS has been established to capitalise upon a series of past and recent efforts around the issues related to global change, in research, training and education programs. In 2008 the University of Venice started the PhD Programme on Climate Change Science and Management (CCSM), in collaboration with the Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change.

In 2009 the Ca’ Foscari and CMCC School further evolved in the Interuniversity Doctoral School ChangeS on Global Change Science and Policy, the University of Salento and University of Sassari, with the aim of promoting and coordinating advanced studies on climate change impacts and policy, organising seminars and short term summer/winter schools for PhD candidates.

With the establishment of the Ca’ Foscari Graduate School, the activities of the PdD have moved under that umbrella and the cooperation with other Italian partners has evolved towards the establishment of a PhD Consortium based at Ca’ Foscari.

In 2014 a reorganisation of the courses offered at Masters level in the field of Environmental Sciences has brought to the launch of a new curriculum on Global Environmental Change entirely taught in English, offered by the Department of Environment, Informatics and Statistics, as a specialisation of the Italian “Laurea Magistrale in Scienze Ambientali (LM75)”, in accordance with the second level of university degrees of the “Bologna Process”.

Research activities

VICCS people have expertise and ongoing research activities in many fields related to global change and social and environmental systems.

The analysis of keywords mentioned in the web sites of personal competences and activities in Wordle shows the results reported in the following figure.

VICCS was established at University Ca’ Foscari as a joint effort of two Departments, whose research activities can be found at:

Department of Environmental Sciences Informatics and Statistics

The research carried out at the Department is oriented in different streams.
One stream focuses on the most challenging global issues (environment, ecology, sustainability, social development) with the aim of promoting an interdisciplinary approach. Researchers develop knowledge of the environmental system dynamics through improving the quality of the available data, refining the understanding of processes, with main research themes being Biology, Renewable Energy Sources, Ecology, Environmental Processes, Earth Science, Maritime Studies.

Other streams focus on applied mathematics and statistics, also boosting interdisciplinary cooperation, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) with focus on distributed and pervasive systems, Digital Humanities, Data Management, Artificial Intelligence, Bioinformatics, Programming Languages and many other aspects of Computer Sciences.

Department of Economics

The research carried out here addresses the present complex global economic environment.

The main study and research sectors include not only economics and finance, but also legal and social issues, as well as quantitative analysis and development of decision making tools.

Furthermore, the Department focuses on scientific knowledge and skills for the development of entrepreneurship and leadership in business.
