Su Tong, born in Suzhou in 1963, is one of the most acclaimed Chinese novelists. He is a member of the presidium of the Chinese Writers Association, vice president of the Jiangsu Writers Association, as well as distinguished Professor at Beijing Normal University where he graduated in 1980. He started to write during his college years, and his first works were published in 1983. Being regarded as one of the most representative writers of Contemporary Chinese Avant-garde Literature, Su Tong has created and published many acclaimed novels, including Raise the Red Lantern (1st ed. Wives and concubines, 1990), Rice (2004), The Boat to Redemption (2010), Petulia’s Rouge (2018), and many more. Some of his works have been adapted into films and TV series, and earned international recognition. The novel Wives and concubines was adapted into the film Raise the Red Lantern (1991) by the director Zhang Yimou. In 2009, the author was awarded the Man Asian Literary Prize for his work The Boat to Redemption. In 2015, he won the Mao Dun Literature Prize for Yellowbird Story
