Italian law 104/92 provides for the right of people with sensory impairment to study, to obtain information, and to enjoy fulfilling social lives through the assistance of qualified sign language interpreters.
The study path of this programme is designed to provide students with both theoretical and practical expertise in translation and interpreting between Italian and the Italian Sign Language (LIS). It will also give them the opportunity to gain the in-depth knowledge of LIS and Italian required to embark upon a career in mediation.
This Master programme is intended for hearing graduates (translation and interpreting) who wish to learn more about the theory and techniques of translation and interpreting from a vocal language (Italian) to a sign language (Italian Sign Language) as well as for communications assistants, employees in the health and welfare sectors, and teachers and interpreters wishing to acquire new skills or refresh existing skills. Students may also opt to take only selected modules.
The objective of this Master programme is to allow students to pursue and acquire in-depth knowledge and experience of working as a translator and interpreter from Italian to Italian Sign Language and vice versa. There is an increasing demand for qualified interpreters, also in view of the probable legal recognition of Italian Sign Language.
Another emerging profession is that of Italian Sign Language translators to work on the production of videos in LIS, translating cultural, information and training materials from Italian as well as from other languages.
