Ca’ Foscari student find an archival document citing Marco Polo

It is not every day that researchers come across a reference to the great Marco Polo in archival documents, but that is exactly what happened to Giulia Migo, a first year master’s student in the History andManagement of Archival and Bibliographical Heritage programme at Ca’ Foscari. While combing throughdocuments in the archive of the city of Treviso recently as part of an internship, she discovered anunpublished document from the 1300s that mentions the famous Venetian explorer and his connections to Crete.

This document is a very exciting find for both the university and the archive due to its historical value. Italso demonstrates the exciting things that can come from Ca’ Foscari’s emphasis on developing researchskills and providing formative and professional experiences outside the classroom.Migo’s internship has also involved carrying out research regarding cartography and land registries, a taskthat has required her to explore documents dating from the 16 th to the 19 th century, as well as analysing abody of documents relating to the 19 th -century abbot Luigi Bailo.
