Usama Al Shahmani

Usama Al Shahmani was born in Baghdad in 1971. He devoted himself to Arabic literature and poetry. A stage play that harshly criticized the Iraqi regime obliged him to flee his country and find refuge in Switzerland. He translated into Arabic the works of great thinkers including Schleiermacher and Habermas. “Trees speak Arabic in foreign lands” (“In der Fremde sprechen die Bäume arabisch”) was published in Zurich in 2018 and was recognized as one of the best books of the year. Since 2018, the book has been reprinted ten times.
