Thesis Regulations

Class LM-44 Mathematical-Physical Modelling for Engineering

For anything not covered in these regulations, reference is made to Article 29 of the University Teaching Regulations.
These Regulations shall come into force for all students enrolled in the Master's Degree Course in Engineering Physics, Italian Ministerial Decree 270/04, as of the 2022/2023 academic year.
These Regulations were approved by the Council of the Department of Molecular Science and Nanosystems at its meeting of 16 June 2022.

Art. 1

The Thesis entails carrying out experimental work on a specific topic assigned to the candidate by the supervisor and approved by the Academic Board.

The Thesis comprises an Internship (6 CFU) and a Final Examination (24 CFU).

Art. 2

Two types of Thesis are possible:

1. 'internal' Thesis – to be carried out in the laboratories of Ca' Foscari University of Venice;
2. 'external' thesis – to be carried out at an external Body, Research Laboratory or Company that has entered into an agreement with the University.

In order to be admitted to the Thesis activity, students must have obtained at least 60 credit points and have submitted an application by filling in the appropriate form to be handed in to the Scientific Campus Secretariat. The official start of the Thesis period shall be from the date of commencement of the experimental work, which must be indicated in the application.

The Academic Board of the Master's Degree Course in Engineering Physics shall approve the Thesis project on the basis of the submitted application and assign the student to a supervisor, two supervisors or a supervisor and a co-supervisor:

• in the case of an 'internal' Thesis, the supervisor must be a tenured Lecturer or a Researcher of the University and may be supported by a second supervisor or a short-term Lecturer;
• in the case of an 'external' thesis, there must be at least two supervisors, one internal (a tenured Lecturer or a Researcher at the University) and one external, as indicated by the Body, Research Laboratory or Company outside the University.

In the case of experimental activities carried out externally, please refer to the University regulations for the necessary fulfilments.

Students carrying out a thesis abroad, as part of the University's exchange projects, must send the internal supervisor a report describing the activity carried out to date every two months.

Art. 3

The supervisor shall be responsible for guiding and coordinating the work carried out by the candidate and for promoting all the fulfilments provided for in these Regulations, except for those for which it is otherwise provided.

Each Lecturer may simultaneously supervise a maximum of 3 Master's degree students, regardless of their Course of Study.

Art. 4

The Thesis entails carrying out experimental work on a specific topic assigned to the candidate by the supervisor and approved by the Academic Board.

In order to be able to acquire the 30 credit points allocated to Thesis activities (Internship and Final Examination), the experimental activity period shall not be less than seven months from the date of entry into the internship and up to the upload of the thesis.

In order to take the Final Examination, students must have obtained all the credit points envisaged in the regulations for the Master's Degree Course (96), with the exception of those allocated for the Final Examination itself (24).

Art. 5

For each student, the Academic Board shall appoint a Thesis Committee, which must comprise the supervisor(s), two tenured Lecturers or Researchers and an alternate member, who shall take the place of the supervisor(s) only if the supervisor(s) is (are) unable to attend.

In the case of an 'external' Thesis, external supervisors shall have the right to be members of the Thesis Committee. In this case, the assessment and evaluation shall be agreed between the two supervisors.

The Thesis Committee shall collectively assess the candidate's work by means of an interview. The interview shall consist of a presentation and discussion of the work carried out by the candidate during the Thesis period.

Any member of the Committee who is unable to attend the interview for legitimate reasons must arrange to be replaced by a substitute, notifying the President of the Academic Board.

Art. 6

The dissertation must be delivered in digital form to each member of the Thesis Committee at least four working days before the presentation.

Final papers and theses may also be written in multimedia form and in languages other than Italian or English, subject to the approval of the Academic Board.

The final exam in the study curriculum must be taken by the deadline set by the University for each session.

Art. 7

The Thesis shall be assessed taking into account the results achieved and their presentation. At the end of the interview, the Thesis Committee shall express a summary evaluation of the work carried out by the candidate, reporting it on the appropriate form. The Thesis evaluation must be attached to the records for the award of the Master's degree grade.

The Thesis Committee may award a score of no more than 8 points, of which up to a maximum of 3 points shall be at the Supervisor's discretion and the remaining points at the Committee's discretion.

Art. 8

The Final Examination shall consist in the presentation to the Final Examination Committee of an original thesis written by the student and submitted exclusively in digital form.

The Final Examination Committee shall be convened by the Scientific Campus Secretariat.

Art. 9

The Final Examination Committee, consisting of 3 to 7 Lecturers mostly chosen from among the University' lecturers (lecturers holding a contract or entrusted position or experts in the subject may also be members), shall be appointed by the Director of the Department and shall normally be chaired by the President of the Academic Board. 1 or 2 substitute members shall also be appointed, who must be present before the beginning of the graduation session to replace members who are unable to attend.

Art. 10

On the basis of the marks obtained by expressing in one-hundred and tenths the average of the exam marks weighted by the respective credit points assigned to each course and the points awarded by the Thesis Committee, the Final Examination Committee shall award a mark out of one-hundred and ten.

The Final Examination Committee may at most round up the final mark to the next higher unit on the basis of the candidate's presentation of the thesis work.

The Committee may award additional bonus points to the graduating student in accordance with the University regulations in force.

Art. 11

The final mark will be obtained by adding the weighted average of the marks obtained by the student during examinations to the additional marks of any bonuses and the final examination. A necessary condition for submitting an application for honours is that the mark, as expressed in one-hundredth and tenths, obtained from the weighted average of the marks acquired during examinations is equal to or higher than 110/110.

Honours shall be awarded unanimously by the Final Examination Committee on the unanimous proposal of the Thesis Committee.
