Silvia Bozza
Statistics

Let’s talk about you: what is your background, what do you teach, and what are your research interests?
I’m Silvia Bozza and I am an associate professor of Statistics. I teach Statistics for the degree programmes in Economics, Markets and Finance and International trade and Tourism. I also manage a Statistics for the Economy Lab, where students can put into practice what they learn on the course. My research interests include forensic statistics, in particular the development of statistical models for the management of scientific evidence in a legal context.
I’ve been collaborating with the Ecole des Sciences Criminelles, University of Lausanne (Switzerland) for many years.

Tell us about your academic path.
I earned my doctorate in Statistics in 2002 at the University of Padova, after spending two years at the School of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Sheffield, UK. I’ve been a researcher and lecturer at Ca’ Foscari since 2004.

What are you most passionate about in your field of research?
There is a wide-ranging literature on judicial errors, induced by an incorrect use of probability calculation and by the absence of adequate statistical models to capture the complexity of the scenarios in which we make decisions. Statistics, and research as well, can offer a precious contribution, in particular to manage the uncertainty that the judicial system has to face on a daily basis.
