Close-ups

Andrea Pietropolli Charmet
Physical Chemistry

What do you teach at Ca’ Foscari? What are your main research interests?
My courses cover spectroscopic techniques, quantum mechanical description of spectroscopic phenomena, and applications of numerical calculation methods in chemistry.
My main areas of research are Molecular Spectroscopy and Theoretical-Computational Chemistry, while my interests focus on analysing and understanding in detail the structure and properties of molecules and materials.

What are you most passionate about in your research?
The ability to accurately simulate the behaviour of molecules and materials and predict new ones.

What do teaching and researching mean to you?
For me, teaching mainly means passing on to students a critical method to analyse a phenomenon that is being investigated. And researching means both striving to understand the phenomenon under investigation even better and finding new and even more interesting ones.

Can you offer any advice to researchers in the early stages of their career?
Be curious (necessary to discover), always use a critical method of analysis (necessary to better understand what to do), do not give up when problems arise and therefore always be confident in your own capabilities.
