Academic Year 2022/23

Following the issue of Ministerial Decrees no. 351 and 352 of 9 April 2022, the Ca' Foscari University of Venice was assigned resources under the NRRP, which were partly allocated to 38th-cycle PhD Programmes (academic year 2022/2023) in relation to the following investments:

  • Ministerial Decree 351/2022 - M4C1 'Strengthening the education offer: from pre-schools to universities': PhD scholarships under Investment 4.1 'Extension of the number of PhD research and innovative programmes for the Public Administration and Cultural Heritage', which aims to increase human capital across research-oriented activities for Public Administrations and Cultural Heritage;
  • Ministerial Decree 352/2022 - M4C2 'From research to business': PhD scholarships under Investment 3.3' Introduction of innovative PhD programmes to serve the innovation needs of undertakings and promote the recruitment of researchers within the businesses', which aims to promote and improve higher education and PhD post-graduate programmes. More specifically, this measure is intended to strengthen high-profile competences, specifically those related to Key Enabling Technologies, through the creation of dedicated PhD programmes supported by undertakings.

The PhD scholarships are assigned specific and mandatory topics, and they may require the applicant to carry out a mandatory study or research period within undertakings, research centres, or Public Administrations, as well as a mandatory study or research period abroad.

Some PhD programme foresee the admission qualification useful to participate in the Call within a period specified from the date of issue of the Call, which is July 20th, 2022.

The PhD Office has prepared a list of F.A.Q. to respond quickly to the frequent questions. If you need further assistance, please write an email to  phd.application@unive.it.

Candidates in possession of the following requirements, regardless of age or nationality, may apply to participate in the competition:

  • "Laurea specialistica" or "laurea magistrale" (second cycle degree);
  • or degree awarded under the system ("ordinamento") in place prior to the one introduced by Ministerial Decree (D.M.) no. 509 of 03 November 1999, amended by Ministerial Decree (D.M.) no. 270 of 22 October 2004;
  • or second-level academic qualification ("titoli accademici di secondo livello") awarded by institutions belonging to the AFAM ("Alta Formazione Artistica e Musicale") sector;
  • or a Master's degree awarded abroad, recognised as such in advance solely for the purpose of admission to the competition. The foreign academic qualification must allows enrollment in a PhD programme in the country of achievement.

The information found in Attachment "A" determines the type of academic qualifications and any other requirements as stipulated by each PhD Programme.

Applications from students already enrolled in PhD Programmes of the Ca' Foscari University of Venice or, in case of Inter-University PhD programme, in the Universities affiliated will not be considered valid.

As indicated on the art. 3, clause 6 of the call, all PhD students are required to have certified English proficiency at least B2 level at the time of enrolment, except for the possibility of acquiring it subsequently, but and not later than March 30th, 2023 otherwise they will be excluded from the PhD programme.

Before the enrollment, the student can:

  • obtain a certificate from an official certifying body or a certificate from a university language training center included in the list displayed in the section recognized certifications
  • fall within one of the exemptions set out in the section case studies
  • support the B2 English language test at the CLA with the tariffs set by the CLA Board.

After the registration (and not later than March 30th, 2023), the student can:

  • support the B2 English language test, free of charge up to twice at the CLA
  • attend, within the limits of available seats, a course in the presence free under the regular schedule of the CLA; at the end of the course when there is scheduled a test that is equivalent to the B2 English language test. Additional courses will eventually be provided by the CLA for a fee
  • obtain a certificate from an official certifying body or a certificate from a university language training center included in the list displayed in the section recognized certifications.

For recognition, the certifications that will be delivered via email to   postlauream@unive.it; in case of certifications obtained at the CLA, the career will be automatically updated.

Graduating students may also apply provided they obtain their degree by September 30th, 2022. Candidates who do not obtain the qualification within the date will be excluded.

In case of waiver, the payment by the candidates interested in the scrolling of the shortlist must take place within three working days from the date of the communication sent by the Post Lauream Office.

By that date, the candidates who are preparing for a degree are requested to communicate the date of the attainment of the qualification to the Post Lauream Office by e-mail, to  postlauream@unive.it, presenting only the substitute declaration if Italian or EU citizens.

The University will exclude those candidate who do not communicate either the graduation date or the final mark within the limits laid down, or who submit uncompleted, incorrect or misdelivered statements.

The suitability of the foreign qualification is verified by the Admissions Committee according to regulations in force in Italy and in the Country where the qualification itself has been awarded, and while respecting the international agreements concerning the recognition of qualifications for further education.


Candidates who do not have Diploma Supplement (only for students who completed their university degree in EU countries), or certificate of equivalence of qualification issued by the competent Italian diplomatic authority in the country in which the qualification was obtained shall be admitted to the selection procedure conditionally and, if successful, must provide them during the online registration procedure or in any case by 31/03/2023, the Diploma supplement or, if the qualification had been obtained outside the European Union, a copy of the diploma, translated and legalized in Italian or English language, together with Declaration of Value ("Dichiarazione di valore in loco”) (The Declaration of Value is an official document issued by the Italian Embassy in the country in which the qualification was issued), prepared by the Italian diplomatic-consular Representation, that is located in the Country where the qualification was obtained.

Applicants must be in possession of a valid foreign academic qualification that allows enrollment in a PhD programme in the country of achievement.

The PhD Degree is open to a limited number of students. More details on constraints, obligations and requirements for each scholarship can be found in Annex A to the Call.

As provided for the art. 5 of the call for application, it is necessay to enclose the following documents to the application form in order to participate in the competition:

  • curriculum vitae et studiorum (European format);
  • PhD proposal research;
  • transcript certificate of the Master's degree awarded with the list of exams taken with grades;

It's also necessary to enclose:

  • a valid copy of a non expired identity document

In the Annex "A" of the call, please see other mandatory and optional qualifications provided for each PhD programme.

The qualifications and publications required by the forms included with this call for applications (Annex "A") must be attached to the online application form in a PDF format and enclosed with files not larger than 10 MB.
You may also add, delete or modify the attached documents after completion of the online application, on condition that you do so by 1.00 PM on Tuesday, August 23rd 2022.
Other way attachments delivery will not be considered.

Pursuant to Presidential Decree (D.P.R.)  no. 445 of 28 December 2000, as amended by article 15, paragraph 1, of Law no. 183 of 12th November 2011, Italian and European citizens are required to submit only a self-declaration with regard to the following personal statuses and details, as certified by Public Administrations, specified in this call for applications and the accompanying forms (Annex "A").All documents must be written preferably in Italian or English, or translated into Italian or English by and under the responsibility of the candidates, with the exception of the documentation relating to the qualification that allows access to the Doctorate (see art.4 of the Call).

Only for PhD Programme in Asian and African Studies

As foreseen in Annex A of the Call, the PhD programme above require candidates to declare their knowledge of one or more foreign languages, in addition to English.
In order to be able with this request, it is necessary to indicate these languages in the appropriate Languages field, which can be found in the online application or attach a special declaration among the optional documentation.

Reference letters

As far as reference letters are concerned, candidates must ask academics/scientists to submit the letters by means of an online procedure (maximum number of two).

To enable this procedure, when compiling their application, candidates must enter the email addresses of the academics/scientists concerned who will receive an email with instructions explaining how to upload their letters. Candidates will receive an email informing them that the letter has been uploaded although these letters may only be viewed by the Administration of PhD Office and the Admissions Committee.

Academics, scientists must upload their letters before the application deadline (August, 23rd 2022, 1 PM.).

Candidates must not upload reference letters, but they must only indicate the email tof the academis/other experts.

We will not allow other forms of sending letters.

Below you will find the indications on the compilation of the research proposal divided for each PhD Programme.

When drafting the proposal, candidates shall comply with the admission criteria provided under Ministerial Decrees 351/2022 and 352/2022.

The PhD Office has no other indications other than these published and provided to us by the individual PhD Programmes, to which we invite the candidates to contact for any clarifications.

Research proposal, in Italian or English language, of about 2000 words (excluding the bibliography), addressing:

  1. topic and state-of-the-art,
  2. main research question,
  3. theoretical and methodological basis,
  4. planned work steps,
  5. expected results and relevance

The proposal should be structured as follows: project title and name of applicant, abstract (max. 1000 characters including spaces), state of the art and references (max. 4000 characters including spaces), project description including goals and methodologies (max. 5000 characters including spaces).

It requires a well-argued and concise description of research proposal: max 10000 characters, including spaces, containing information on:

  1. scope and objectives of the research
  2. state of the art research
  3. survey methodologies proposed
  4. results expected
  5. bibliography

Applicants are required to submit a research proposal, written in English (with a maximum of 10.000 characters, including spaces). The proposal must indicate the research question, the state of the art of relevant literature on the proposed topic and the main contribution of the project in theoretical and empirical terms.

Research proposal, written in Italian or English or French or Spanish or German, with a maximum length of 7 folders max. 2000 characters including spaces each folder (excluding the bibliography).

    The proposal must include:

    1. the title of the project;
    2. state of the art and literature summary (max. 5.000 characters including spaces);
    3. the project description, which must cover a topic related to the Research Topics indicated in the Annex "A" of the call for application or between the themes of topic-specific scholarship, with indication of the objectives and methodology of research (max. 10.000 characters including spaces);
    4. work plan for each of the three years of the PhD programme (max. 3000 characters).

      Applicants are required to present a short research proposal about the topic concerning the themes of the doctorate as indicated in the special sections of the Annex "A" of the call for application, including those referring to the scholarships financed by external institutions. In particular, the proposal, with a maximum of 10,000 characters including spaces, must indicate the proposed theme which should focus on the European right, the state of the art, the objectives and research methodology, the expected results with indication of the main contribution of the project from a theoretical and practical point of view, and an essential bibliography. The project presented, necessary for the selection, will not necessarily be the one developed by the candidate during the PhD.

      Applicants are required to submit a short research proposal on a topic pertaining to the PhD themes indicated in the appropriate sections of Annex "A" of the call for application. In particular, the proposal, written in English (for a total of 10,000 characters maximum, including spaces), must indicate the subject, the state of the art research on the proposed topic, the objectives, the research methodology and the main contribution of the project in theoretical and empirical terms.

      A brief and well-reasoned description of the research proposal (in Italian or in English) is required, concerning one of the themes in which the PhD programme is organized. The proposal must not exceed 10000 characters (spaces included) and must contain:

      1. topic and state-of-the-art
      2. main research question
      3. theoretical and methodological basis
      4. planned work steps
      5. expected results and relevance
      6. bibliography

      The online publication of the schedule of selections has full notification value for the purpose of calling candidates who will be admitted to the oral test.

      With the publication of the results of the evaluation of the qualifications, the times of the interviews will be communicated. The interviews could, based on the number of candidates admitted to the oral exams, continue over the following days.

      The candidate must be available, on the day and at the time established by the Admissions Committee., showing the valid ID document uploaded during application.
