Ca’ Foscari Produces the First Italian Undergraduate Theses Written in Chinese

Ten students of Ca' Foscari University of Venice wrote the first Bachelor's Degree theses entirely in Chinese, within the double Degree in Chinese Language and culture.

This year, ten graduates of the new joint honours program in Chinese language and Culture at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice are the first students in Italy to write their thesis in Chinese.

The students were given a scholarship in their first year to study abroad in China where they attended lectures and seminars and had access to internship opportunities.

Ca’ Foscari is the only university in the country to offer a joint honours program in Chinese language and culture, initiated by professor Tiziana Lipiello between 2015 and 2016.

Alessia Iurato, one of the ten students that graduated this year, says her experience in China was “fantastic but also very hard work. Alongside lectures, we had opportunities to develop practical skills;  I entered in a teaching competition, for example, and won second place. My year in China was a great learning experience.” Her thesis focuses on helping Italian students learn Chinese by analyzing grammar mistakes made in 450 phrases in Chinese written by a test group of 50 people.

The students have defended their thesis in video link with Beijing, where a committee of five professors from Capital Normal University and other Chinese institutions will evaluate their work.
