A new course on Azerbaijani Contemporary History just launched at Ca’ Foscari

On September 10 the first lesson of the course entitled “Azerbaijan’s Contemporary History, Foreign Policy, and Economics” was held. The course, given by Prof. Carlo Frappi, is frequented by the second year students of bachelor’s degree programme in Language, Culture and Society of Asia and Mediterranean Africa.

The course aims to offer a comprehensive picture of the contemporary history of the Republic of Azerbaijan with particular reference to the phase following the acquisition of independence from the Soviet Union. Moreover, through the analysis of Azerbaijan’s foreign policy and economic development strategies, the course provides the tools needed to understand this unique country’s position in the post-Soviet context while also offering a perspective permitting the appraisal of the regional policies pursued by the main actors active in the Eurasian space – from the United States to the European Union, and from Russia to Turkey and Iran.

The course contributes to enlarging the Ca’ Foscari University’s educational offerings on Azerbaijan and the Caucasus, which already includes the courses on “Archaeology of Anatolia and the Caucasus” and on “Modern and Contemporary History of Caucasus and Central Asia”, respectively given by Prof. Elena Rova and Prof. Aldo Ferrari.
