Italian Courses for Degree-Seeking Students
International students enrolled on bachelor's and master's degree programs taught entirely in English are required to earn 3 Italian ECTS credits (CFU) if they do not already have at least a B1 level of language proficiency.
The required credits must be obtained by attending a free Italian language course (from A1 to B1 level) offered by the University Language Centre (CLA).
To determine which course level to take, you must complete an in-person placement test at the CLA.
Only international students enrolled in the Bachelor's degree program in Hospitality Innovation and e-Tourism are required to obtain 6 CFU (credits) in Italian during their study course. For information regarding course levels and procedures, please contact the relevant campus office at campus.scientifico@unive.it.
Exemption categories
If you achieve a B2 result on the placement test (which is equivalent to a B1 proficiency level), you will be exempt from attending the course, and the 3 ECTS credits (CFU) will be earned through other activities.
You are also exempt from the course requirement if you provide a recognized international certification or it is possible to earn exemption from the 3-credit Italian language requirement in the following ways:
- Demonstrate having already carried out a full year of study for which the only language of instruction was Italian.
- Demonstrate having taken and passed a 6-credit (half-year) university course taught in Italian.
- Demonstrate a B1-level knowledge of Italian by taking a placement test offered free of charge by our University Language Centre.
- Demonstrate having passed a B1-level Italian course offered by our University Language Centre, another Italian university or a Società Dante Alighieri school that involved at least contact 50 hours.
- Demonstrate having carried out a period of study abroad in Italy that lasted 12 months or more and involved taking and passing a course taught in Italian.
- Have successfully completed a Foundation Year programme at an Italian university that required demonstrating the acquisition of a B1-level knowledge of Italian.
- Have successfully completed the Marco Polo Programme.
Documentation regarding certifications and/or exemptions should be sent to welcome@unive.it during the enrolment phase or to carriere.studenti@unive.it after enrolment.
