Enrico Vanino (University of Sheffield) - Unpacking spatial earnings inequality: The role of people, place, and industry effects

Abstract:

Sub-national spatial disparities are increasing among many OECD countries, with income, productivity, and knowledge increasingly polarised in few urban areas within countries. Reducing these regional disparities could address part of developed countries' economic growth problems, but there is still limited understanding of the nature and drivers of these regional inequalities. In this study we use a comprehensive administrative database linking education, tax, and employment data to examine the influence of people, place, and industry characteristics in driving spatial earnings disparities in the UK. Applying seminal earnings models and advanced decomposition methods we estimate the influence of these factors in driving earnings inequalities across UK commuting zones. Our results show that place effects drive more regional inequality than previously thought, at least among the younger cohort of workers. These are driven by higher wages paid in similar industries across commuting zones, which can be explained by a different intensity in the use of skilled workers across places.
