The course is inserted between the basic disciplines common to the Program of Study. The course aims at offering students a critical knowledge of literary genres and encouraging a comparative, intercultural approach. Because of the broad scope of the subject matter, different topics will be chosen each year.
At the end of the course, the student is expected to know:
- the authors and works that have been dealt with during the course, the historical and literary context;
- the basic tools of literary studies and research techniques.

Besides, the student will be able to:
- apply knowledge and acquired tools in order to carry out a close reading of literary texts and interpret literary phenomena;
- communicate, starting from an autonomous reflection and in an appropriate and coherent manner, concepts and data concerning the discipline.
- Knowledge of Italian language;
- basic knowledge of literary history and theory.
MODULE'S TITLE: The novel's genres

Lectures aim at giving an essential profile of novel by sampling from models of the '700s. and '800s. up to the '900s.
- F. BERTONI, Romanzo, Firenze, La Nuova Italia (cap. II, La città del romanzo).
- F. BRIOSCHI, C. DI GIROLAMO, Elementi di teoria letteraria (cap. IV).

- Students must read 5 novels selected from a list which will be given out and discussed during lessons.

- A reading package and a critical bibliography will be provided at the beginning of the course.

- Materials will be avaible on Moodle platform.
The exam consists in an oral examination (which lasts about 15 minutes) with some questions about topics discussed during the course. The knowledge demonstrated and the adequacy of the answers will determine the final grade.
