The course is a core course in LCSL degree program. Students will expand and consolidate linguistic and metalinguistic abilities acquired over the two preceding years. They will gain knowledge and understanding of the elements of textual analysis necessary to understand, compose and translate texts from Italian into English and vice-versa.
English language 3 is a year-long course with the module held by the Course Professor (second semester) and associated language practice labs (“esercitazioni linguistiche”, first AND second semester) facilitated by the “Collaboratori Esperti Linguistici” (CEL).

The aim of the module is to consolidate students' metalinguistic competence and acquire knowledge of translation theory and practice to translate between English L2 and Italian L1 and vice versa. In order to actively and successfully participate in the module, the practice labs aim at developing and consolidating integrated language skills (both spoken and written) at a high proficiency level (consolidating the C1 level of the CEFR). The integrated skills focus on the comprehension and production of authentic material in English.

1. Knowledge and Understanding: the course will consolidate the syntactic, lexical and pragmatic aspects of English (high language proficiency). Students will be able to understand complex texts that they will translate from English into Italian, and vice versa. Students will also be able to identify and critically analyse linguistic and cultural variation present in the texts to be translated depending on context of situation and genre.

2. Applying Knowledge and Understanding: Students will be able to use their linguistic competence and the theoretical-methodological approaches provided by translation theory and studies to critically analyse and translate texts, considering – at the same time – the several communicative contexts and real-life applications of the texts in both the source language and the target language. Students will also be able to write complex academic texts and to discuss the topics covered in the course as well as their application in real-life communicative situations.

3. Making Judgments: students will write and translate complex texts in English, and discuss textual features and their impact on translation and communicative choices.

4. Communication Skills: students will be able to appropriately interact and discuss the metalinguistic and cultural aspects involved in the translation of a text. Students will be able to employ communicative strategies, both in spoken and in written form, consolidating the C1 level of the CEFR. Students will be able to communicate clearly and effectively and demonstrate competence in mediating contents from English into Italian, and vice versa.

5. Learning Skills: students will be able to read, analytically and critically, complex academic and specialised texts; they will also be able to report on these topics, in both written and oral form; students will be able to self-assess their language as well as their translation-related competence.

The theoretical module starts in the second semester and is a blended course. The language practice classes start in the first semester and continue in the second semester.

The expected learning outcomes are assessed in a final written exam as well as through a portfolio-based continuous assessment.

The WRITTEN EXAM (135 minutes), is a written and annotated English-Italian Translation. Students are allowed to use a monolingual English dictionary and an English-Italian bilingual dictionary. Students whose first language is not Italian are also allowed to use a “Student’s First Language-English” dictionary.

The PORTFOLIO assesses the student’s integrated language skills at the C1+ level (see Learning Outcomes above). The portfolio consists of three tasks: an argumentative essay based on an assigned topic, a translation from Italian into English, and a short academic oral presentation. The portfolio can be submitted in two different ways:
(1) during the academic year (portfolio-based continuous assessment)
(2) before each exam session (three windows, one for each session).

English Language 3 is a 12 credit course. It consists of two parts:
- theoretical module in the second semester (with prof Bencini); only for students in the international politics curriculum
- language practice classes in small groups with the CEL to develop the C1+ level (CEFR) in written and spoken language.

Traditional teaching methods integrated with collaborative learning groups and the use of multimedia resources and by the students' active participation to translation activities in class guided by the Professor to train students in how to translate, individually or in small groups, from English into Italian different textual types.
