New Books in Environmental Humanities | Multispecies Politics in the Anthropocene

Ca' Bottacin, Main Hall

New Books in Environmental Humanities series:

Multispecies Politics in the Anthropocene:
Human-Animal Relations from Antiquity to the Present

Milinda Banerjee (University of St Andrews) and Krešimir Vuković (NICHE, Research Cluster Waterscapes).

Capitalist modes of production tend to see non-human beings as commodities subject to human exploitation. Current global crises call for a reconsideration of human-animal relations as animals need to be included in multispecies communities that recognize their essential place in the wider network of life. The authors of the two books presented, Milinda Banerjee and Krešimir Vuković, will have a discussion on human-animal relations in history and the contemporary world. Together with the discussants they will address the place of animals in the Anthropocene and the crucial roles they played in environmental history, from ancient Rome to modern India.

The event serves as the launch of two books: Wolves of Rome: The Lupercalia from Roman and Comparative Perspectives (De Gruyter Oldenbourg 2023) and Subaltern Studies 2.0: Being against the Capitalocene (Prickly Paradigm Press 2022).
