Abstract
The accelerating demand for digital access to cultural content has placed increasing on cultural institutions to undertake comprehensive digitization initiatives. However, many organizations—particularly small and medium-sized ones—continue to face significant obstacles in securing the financial, technical, and human resources required for digitization, digital preservation, and the effective management and dissemination of digital assets. Ensuring the financial sustainability of such initiatives remains a critical challenge. Within this context, the European Union has developed Europeana, a digital platform aimed at aggregating and disseminating Europe’s digitized cultural heritage while offering a suite of supportive services for cultural institutions. This research examines the Europeana initiative with the objective of assessing its role in alleviating the financial burden of digitization processes. Furthermore, it explores the extent to which the Europeana model offers a viable framework for improving the economic sustainability of digital heritage projects more broadly and reflects on the challenges ahead, related to newly launched European initiatives.
