Abstract: This talk explores yuntaku, a practice of Okinawan storytelling, as a method for critically engaging with Okinawa’s histories and contemporary realities, highlighting its role in knowledge creation and peace education within militarized everyday life. Drawing on dialogic engagement with an Okinawan peace educator, I show that yuntaku is more than casual conversation: it is a vital space for cultural memory, intergenerational connection, and practices of care. I examine how narratives and testimonies shared through yuntaku foster awareness of a sense of shared responsibility, using insights from autoethnography and participatory observation. Ultimately, this talk emphasizes how yuntaku nurtures Indigenous ways of knowing and supports reflective, community-centered practices in Okinawa.
