Keith Weller Taylor (Professor Emeritus, Cornell University)
Myth and Evidence in Vietnamese History
General knowledge about Vietnamese history is widely based on twentieth-century nationalist exuberance. What is taught both inside and outside of Vietnam are myths of a prehistoric antiquity, of resistance to foreign invaders, and of national unity. These myths will be surveyed in the light of evidence.

Olga Dror (Texas A&M University)
From Confucius to Ho Chi Minh: Establishing and Preserving Sacred Places on Vietnamese Olympus
I will discuss the origins, continuity, and disruptions of sacred spaces in Vietnam, analyzing different religious traditions through the centuries—tracing the development from Confucianism, Buddhism and Daoism, through folk religions—including the worship of Mother Goddesses—to the establishment of political religions.
