The Use of Vietnamese Folk Materials in Contemporary Art

21 May 2026, 8.45-10.15
Rio Novo, Aula 5

This event takes place in a particularly significant context, as Vietnam participates for the first time in the 61st International Art Exhibition – Venice Biennale with an official national pavilion, marking an important milestone in global artistic dialogue. Artist Le Huu Hieu stands out for his large-scale installations, especially Silkworm, in which he uses highly symbolic materials such as jackfruit wood, fire, red lacquer, and natural fibers to evoke transformation, resilience, cultural memory, and spiritual depth. His artistic practice creates a bridge between Vietnamese identity, folk memory, and the language of global contemporary art.

This talk offers a valuable opportunity to explore the relationship between traditional materials, Vietnamese cultural identity, and contemporary art in an international context.
