Conceptualizing Atmospheres

Sala B - Ca' Bernardo

Part of the PRIN PNRR 2022 research project "Atmospheres: What They Are and How They Are Grasped" (ATMOS), this conference brings together philosophers, literary theorists, and cognitive scientists to explore the nature of atmospheres as affective, spatial, and aesthetic phenomena.

Despite growing interest across disciplines—from architecture to art theory—atmospheres remain conceptually elusive. The event aims to deepen our understanding of how atmospheres are constituted, perceived, and represented, through talks on topics such as enactivism, mood empathy, and the aesthetics of literature, music, and visual media.

Speakers include:
Carola Barbero (University of Turin)
Claudio Calosi (Ca’ Foscari University of Venice)
David Collins (University of Cambridge)
Elvira Di Bona (University of Turin)
Stefano Ercolino (Ca’ Foscari University of Venice)
Garry L. Hagberg (Bard College)
Mauro Lenti (University of Turin)
Anders Muskens (University of Tübingen)
Krisztina Orbán (University of Tübingen)
David Romand (Aix-Marseille University)
Elena Santi (Ca’ Foscari University of Venice)
Alberto Voltolini (University of Turin)
Hong Yu Wong (University of Tübingen)

The program also features Atmospheres, a recital for historical keyboard and historical violin, performed by Anders Muskens (keyboard) and Hong Yu Wong (violin), with music by Vivaldi, Galuppi, C.P.E. Bach, and Schubart. The performance is presented by Das Neue Mannheimer Orchester, under the artistic direction of Anders Muskens.
