Collecting, Structuring and Visualizing Data: New Horizons of Slavic DH

Sala Marino Berengo - Ca' Foscari

This workshop will illustrate various digital tools used in the field of Slavic studies to collect, structure, analyze, and visualize data from several ongoing research projects. Ilaria Sicari, currently a Marie Skłodowska-Curie postdoctoral fellow (Ca' Foscari University) will present the project "Transnational Book Diplomacy beyond the Cultural Cold War: Towards a Socio-Cultural History of the Tamizdat" together with Valeriia Korotkova (data analyst at Stanford University), who will illustrate the tools used to extract, analyze, and visualize data from a corpus of archival materials. The data previewed here represents one of the main scientific results of the MSCA-Tamizdat project.
Georgii Korotkov (PhD candidate, Stanford University) will introduce the use of a computational method developed to extract data from periodical publications, through the use of a graph transformer trained on 8,500 annotated periodical pages to learn to resolve visual ambiguities by reading the page in its entirety and not just its parts.
