Florilegia Patristica
Polemics and Erudition in the Christian Denkraum of Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages

30 March-1 April 2023, Aula Marino Berengo, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice

In late antiquity and the Middle Ages, compilations of patristic excerpts were at the same time a textual form and a mindset, which all Christianities shared across the Mediterranean and beyond. From Latin Gaul to Muslim-ruled Mesopotamia, from Byzantium to Ethiopia, Christians of all confessions shaped a substantial part of their comprehension of dogma and spirituality through a "reading in excerpts" of the authorities of the past. This workshop will bring together specialists from all fields of late antique and medieval Christian studies for three days of common reflection on this phenomenon and on its intercultural implications.
