AgriFoodTech start-ups and food systems transformation: taking stock and looking ahead
VSM lecture held by Laurens Klerkx, "Universidad de Talca, Chile. Wageningen University, Netherlands"

Abstract
In the past decade, there have been strong calls for innovation to address serious sustainability challenges in the agrifood sector, and support overall food systems transformation. Amongst the different transformative concepts that are gaining currency, AgriFoodTech has become more prominent in recent years. AgriFoodTech includes technologies such as AI, robotics, sensors, precision fermentation, synthetic biology that have the potential to transform food systems, by radically changing the way food is produced, processed, traded, and consumed. AgriFoodTech innovations are often introduced and developed by start-ups following the Silicon Valley model based on seed and venture capital with the expectation of quick growth and scaling. While there is a large literature in management and entrepreneurship studies looking at different aspects of start-ups, in the particular context of AgriFoodTech this is a recently emerging field of study. This talk will discuss the state of the art in the study of AgriFoodTech start-ups, and to what extent these can be key agents in food systems transformation. It will outline several research questions that require future attention from different social science disciplines.
