GIS and Historical Digital Atlases

The presentation discusses the creation of cartography focused on historical studies, considering the specificities of this discipline and its sources. The use of Geographic Information Systems, designed for the modern world's logic, presents several problems, despite being exciting for historical research. These difficulties are related to both the uncertainty of the past and the ambivalence in interpreting evidence. Furthermore, fuzzy information and the different concepts of space representation that existed in the past are also relevant topics, as well as the difficulties inherent to narrative cartography. These topics will be debated regarding various experiences of Historical Digital Atlases, emphasizing the case of the Digital Atlas of Portuguese America, which will serve as a basis for these reflections.
