Mapping for Digital Humanities

This workshop aims to discuss the cartographic language focused on humanistic approaches, especially those centered on the representation of human narratives. Humanistic research can take much advantage of analysis that consider space as a relevant variable. This workshop will introduce some basic notion of cartography and mapping production tools that can help humanists to express their ideas using cartographic language. Journey diaries, literary sources, and general documentation on population displacement will be sources used to discuss cartographic methods.

PROGRAM:

  • Cartography and DH: interdisciplinary perspectives
  • Introduction to basic mapping (shapes and tools)
  • Tabular data and map making
  • The usage of raster images
  • Narrative maps

The workshop will be held in presence at San Giobbe, Aula Saraceno, by Tiago Gil, Universidade de Brasília and Visiting Researcher in Digital History at the VeDPH
