Ofer Gazit. Beyond Borders and Bar-lines: Entry points in New York’s Migrant jazz scenes

Aula Milone, Malcanton Marcorà

Lecturer: Ofer Gazit, Tel Aviv University,

This lecture theorizes the notion of “musical border” to explore the entanglements of migration, genre and ethnic identity among New York’s migrant jazz musicians. Based on ethnographic research conducted between 2013 and 2017, I show how jam sessions function as an entry point to the New York jazz scene and provide a sense of belonging to recently arrived migrants. I also show how jam sessions separate those musicians who are welcome from those who are not, functioning as a kind of “musical border.” To examine these potentialities and limitations, I analyze the musical procedures and unspoken codes that govern two jam sessions: The first in a Haitian bar in central Brooklyn and the second in a Colombian-owned club in Queens. Ultimately, I argue that migrant jazz musicians use their musical competence and familiarity with jazz to reinforce, blur and cross New York’s musical borders.
