Title: Closing Knowledge Gaps: The Dynamics of Attention to Information Sources during Gap Sea

Abstract:

Gap search is a ubiquitous process with a straightforward structure. It starts with a knowledge gap and proceeds through successive queries that aim to close the gap. What is less  clear is how it shapes the attention of the searcher. What keeps her focused on the search, and when does she shift her focus away? We develop a model of gap search that  illuminates how the concentration of attention of knowledge workers tightens and relaxes over successive queries of an information source. We explore the model empirically with  longitudinal data about information source use of knowledge workers in a large multinational company. We find that knowledge workers follow attention cycles during gap search.
