Iana Onegova (Ca' Foscari University of Venice) - Worker Mobility, Retention, and the Finance Wage Premium

Abstract:
Financial-sector workers earn persistently higher wages than comparable workers elsewhere, but the role of mobility in sustaining this premium is unclear. Using matched employer-employee administrative data from the Netherlands for full-time workers, this paper tests whether the finance premium reflects a competitive “war for talent” or internal retention and rent-sharing. We show that finance workers have average or below-average mobility, despite large wage gains when they move. Most of the premium arises within firms, not through job transitions. It is strongest in the lower and middle earnings distribution, consistent with wage compression, bonuses, internal career ladders, and firm-specific rents.
