Sebastiano Della Lena (Monash University) - How do you know you won’t like it if you’ve (never) tried it? Preference discovery and data design

Abstract:

Consumers discover preferences through experience, but firms, platforms, and policymakers often design that experience. We develop a data-design framework in which the structure of consumption data shapes learning. Bundling creates correlated exposure across goods, so utility surprises propagate through the co-consumption network and affect beliefs about related goods. When estimation errors are known, exposure can be targeted to shut down learning or amplify misperceptions. Even without such information, robust designs affect learning through the geometry of past exposure: popularity-biased bundles slow discovery, while correlation-breaking bundles accelerate it. The framework highlights a new channel for market power and regulation.
