Abstract:

Macroeconomic models of climate change routinely price in damages to agriculture, energy demand, and labor productivity, but rarely account for the economic value lost when climate change reshapes natural ecosystems. Forest ecosystem services — recreation, habitat, non-wood products, water regulation — remain largely invisible in the damage functions that drive climate policy, in part because they are hard to resolve at the spatial scale where these dynamics actually unfold. This paper takes a step toward closing that gap: it develops a spatially explicit module that translates projected changes in Plant Functional Types (PFTs) under climate change into monetized damages to forest ecosystem services, and integrates it into the CLIMRISK integrated assessment framework.
