The modernization of Aristotle: verisimilitude and its variations in Golden Age Spain

Aula Baratto - Ca' Foscari

18 - 20 November 2025

In the Poetics, Aristotle establishes a fundamental distinction between the probable (τὸ εἰκός) and the necessary (τὸ ἀναγκαῖον) in the composition of a literary work. From what Aristotle says on this subject, the concept of verisimilitude develops in Modernity. The conference will focus on the concept of verisimilitude in the 16th and 17th centuries in both literature and art, in literary theory and in artistic theory.
