Gender in Romance languages. How formal approaches can inform communication policies

Ca' Bernardo e Ca' Bembo

Gender is a linguistic category (encompassing syntactic, morphological, grammatical, and semantic aspects) that plays a significant role in the cultural representation of gender for persons and social groups. Formal linguistic analysis is not always considered in the planning of inclusive communication policies, and vice versa. Often, inclusive policies are not informed by advanced linguistic knowledge.
This workshop aims to emphasise the need to combine formal linguistic knowledge with inclusive communication skills. It will be held as a parallel session of the international conference Going Romance, held at Ca' Foscari for the first time and which, over 30 years of work, has become an essential forum for academic discussion on the linguistics of Romance languages.
