Border Memories: Writing, Roots, and Identity

Sala Marino Berengo - Ca' Foscari

The event "Border Memories: Writing, Roots, and Identity," that hosts the writer and journalist Angela Valenti Durazzo, represents a unique opportunity for dialogue between students, University, and members of the Albanian community in Italy.
This meeting will allow students of Albanian language, literature, and culture, and beyond, to meet with members of the Albanian community, thus fostering direct dialogue between the academic world and the community, fostering historical memory and cultural exchange. The event will include poetry readings and an open conversation with the author, who will focus on the value of writing as a vehicle for memory, as a cultural bridge between Italy and Albania, and as a tool of solidarity to share her direct experience in Albania gained through projects with the ASA – L'Altra Sponda dell'Adriatico association, which she founded. Her major works include the essays 'I Durazzo. From Slaves to Doges of the Republic of Genoa' (2004) and 'Il fratello del Doge' (2012), and the poetry collections: 'Qui dove il nulla mi è padrona' (2017) and 'Raccontami i miei sogni' (2024), in which her poetic and narrative inspiration intertwines with her personal sensibility and attention to collective experience.
Giuseppe Durazzo, a lawyer and descendant of a historic Genoese family of ancient Albanian origins, has served as Honorary Consul of the Republic of Albania for Liguria and the Principality of Monaco since 2011. His commitment to promoting Albanian culture is reflected in numerous meetings and initiatives with Albanian authors, writers, poets, and artists. He organized the celebration of Albania's National Day in Monaco and artistic events such as "Albania and Kosovo United in Art" (Genoa). During the meeting, the Honorary Consul will bring the official greetings of the Consulate of Albania, emphasizing the importance of cultural and academic exchanges, the historical memory of Albanian communities in Italy, and the role of writing and art as tools for dialogue and solidarity.
