Creator and Creatures – Federico García Lorca and His Symbols

Teatro Ca’ Foscari a Santa Marta

“I am neither a man nor a poet, but a wounded pulse probing things from the other side.” Under the sign of this line, Scenari DiVersi dedicates its final event to Federico García Lorca, a central figure in twentieth-century poetry and theatre, whose work brings together popular imagination and modernist tension.

Lorca’s figure is often surrounded by established images and myths: the poet martyred by Francoism, the innovator of twentieth-century Spanish theatre, the author persecuted for his sexuality in early twentieth-century Spain. His poetry, however, reveals a far more complex figure: an individual shaped by deep inner contradictions, unspoken desires, and an uneasy relationship with his own creative force, which only in the final years of his life would find in theatre a new and radical form of embodiment.

“Creator and Creatures” is a visionary journey through Lorca’s poetry, an unsettling dialogue between the author and the figures he brings into being. From Andalusia to New York, Lorca’s symbols take shape and voice, exposing fractures, desires, and tensions between identity and poetic fiction. Through texts drawn from “Romancero Gitano” and “Poeta en Nueva York”, the audience is invited to enter a poetic universe marked by shattered illusions, bodies in revolt, and tragic visions.

The event is part of Scenari DiVersi, a student-led project that brings poetry to the stage through theatrical events combining interpretation and storytelling. With the support of ESU Venezia, from November 2025 to March 2026 students from the Department of Linguistic and Comparative Cultural Studies will present a series of monthly events hosted at Teatro Ca’ Foscari Santa Marta, dedicated to poets and authors from different linguistic traditions.
