50 Years of Independence for the Portuguese-Speaking African Countries (PALOP)

Sala B - Ca' Bernardo

The conference "50 Years of Independence for the Portuguese-Speaking African Countries (PALOP): Languages, Education, and Language Policies" celebrates the 50th anniversary of the independence of the PALOPs (Portuguese-speaking African countries), which was marked in 2025, by taking stock of linguistic developments in each of these territories, where Portuguese is embedded in highly multilingual contexts. Through an interdisciplinary lens, the scheduled presentations will explore the dynamics between language, society, and the state in Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe. The main topics of discussion will be the language policies adopted after independence, the processes of officialization and nationalization of Portuguese, and the current challenges in the teaching and daily use of the language in environments where national languages, creoles, and local varieties of Portuguese coexist.
