Andrić and Italy: A Conversation with Marija Mitrović

Sala Sarpellon - Ca' Bembo

On May 21 2026, an event featuring Marija Mitrović will take place in the Sala Sarpellon at Ca’ Bembo, where she will present the volumes "Andrić i Italija" (2025) and "Sul mare brillavano vasti silenzi" (2024). The two works establish a dialogue between the South Slavic territories and Italy. The monograph "Andrić i Italija" (Akademska knjiga, 2025) focuses on the reception of the author within the Italian cultural context, while "Sul mare brillavano vasti silenzi" (Vita Activa Nuova, 2024) reconstructs the literary image of Trieste through contributions by various writers, from Miloš Crnjanski and Ivo Andrić to contemporary authors.

Marija Mitrović was a full professor of Slavic studies, first at the University of Belgrade and later at the Faculty of Humanities and Philosophy of the University of Trieste. Her research interests concern comparative Slavic literatures, as well as their connections with Italy. Among her principal publications are: "Storia della cultura e della letteratura serba" (2015), "Pregled slovenačke književnosti" (1995, tradotto in tedesco nel 2001), "Sul mare brillavano vasti silenzi" (2004), "Cultura serba a Trieste" (2009), e "Andrić i Italija" (2025).
