Open-Air Libraries: Encounters Between Urban Art and Literature in Portugal

Fondazione dell'Albero d'Oro - Palazzo Vendramin Grimani, Venezia, San Polo 2033

The roundtable, conceived as a public outreach event for a non-academic audience, will explore the theme of urban art in Portugal, with a particular focus on its intersections with literature. It will highlight the dialogue and convergences between the literary representation of the urban landscape and the representation of literary motifs within that same landscape.
The speakers will consider a diverse range of works, reflecting the sensibilities of different historical periods, including azulejo panels, statues, murals, and installations. A common thread will be their public dimension and their integration into the urban fabric. Different urban contexts will be examined, as well as a variety of spaces of social interaction, from city centres and peripheral areas to transit spaces.
From public policy to street art, the discussion will address the multiple agents and practices involved in the recontextualisation of iconic or canonical texts, characters, and authors of Portuguese literature, exploring how they are re-signified through different forms of public engagement and reception.
Speakers:
Olga Tzatzadaki (Università Iuav Venezia), "Letteratura e spazio urbano. Dalla narrazione alla conoscenza socio-spaziale".
Roberto Francavilla (Università di Genova), "<i>E que fundo esse mar / num bairro de Lisboa</i>: Immaginari urbani fra poesia e fotografia".
Daniela Simões (Universidade Nova de Lisboa), "Pareti parlanti: Rapporto tra letteratura e arte nella decorazione delle stazioni della Metropolitana di Lisbona".
Chair: Eugenio Lucotti (Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia)
