From organic photochemistry to (bio)degradable and recyclable material

Sala Conferenze Orio Zanetto, Campus Scientifico di via Torino (Mestre)

Seminar with Prof. Hannes Houck, the University of Warwick.

Event organized by Prof. Matteo Gigli as part of the educational offer of the doctoral course in Sustainable Chemistry.

Abstract:
This seminar will highlight some of our photochemical strategies to design new organic building blocks that can be used to design polymer materials with improved functionality and sustainability. Specifically, small molecule photo(cyclo)addition reactions will be introduced that allow for the efficient formation of covalently bound reaction products under (visible) light irradiation. Importantly, the thus formed adducts display subsequent reactivity that can be activated on-demand to introduce smart and responsive behavior, including (bio)degradation and closed-loop recyclability. This will be illustrated in (i) poly(ethylene glycol)-based 3D printed materials and mRNA lipid nanoparticles that can degrade in water, (ii) so-called ‘light-stabilised dynamic materials’  (e.g. microparticles) that can be programmed to de-crosslink through a spontaneous cycloreversion at room temperature, and (iii) a novel thermoset material based on [2+2] thiomaleimide photodimers that can be intrinsically recycled.
