Venice stands as an emblematic case, almost a summary of the various aspects of sustainability—a city that is truly an "inventory of problems." This book traces its history, starting from the period of the Serenissima, when Venice experienced exceptional development, followed by a phase of slowdown. It then continues through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, marked by two significant waves of industrialization, concluding with an extensive focus on today's challenges.

Regarding recent history, the city's decline, symbolically beginning in 1966 with the "acqua granda" (great flood), is investigated in its multiple facets. These include hydraulic and morphological instability, deindustrialization, depopulation and housing issues, overtourism, large cruise ships, and more.
