Bread, Butter, and Bacon on Shore

Campus San Giobbe - Aula Saraceno | Online

International Hybrid Workshop, 27 - 28 November 2025
Bread, Butter, and Bacon on Shore. Gendered Perspectives on the Economic, Social, and Cultural Dimensions of Food and ‘Feeding Relationships’ in Maritime Contexts in Modern Times (18th-20th Centuries).

The workshop aims to highlight the multifaceted nature of gendered, socio-economic, and cultural practices related to the entire foodstuff ‘lifecycle’ (i.e., production, transformation, and/or circulation, consumption) in maritime environments in Modern times (17th–20th centuries). Moreover, its goal is to make emerge the most salient features of ‘feeding relationships’, i.e., breadwinning and caregiving, in maritime contexts in the longue (modern) durée.

The workshop will be held both in person and online.

More information about the program and participation details will be available soon.

The workshop is organised by NextGenerationEU Project ‘Ondine’ (Dep. History, Humanities and Society – Tor Vergata University of Rome), and Venice School of Management – Ca’ Foscari University Venice.
