Euro-American models and the evolution of Italian tertiary education

VSM lecture held by Andrea Mariuzzo,  Professor of History of Education at Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia, Modena - Reggio Emilia

The event will be also available online via Gmeet

In the Twentieth century, the US model of higher education has emerged as dominant in the West for the globalization of academic exchanges and institutional development. However, almost everywhere the adoption of ‘American-style’ curricula and professional habits has been the result of complex negotiations according to the needs and priorities of local contexts and academic communities. Dealing with the Italian case, the communication will be focused on the introduction of Ph.D. programs for the selection of aspiring academics, and the establishment of business schools for cultural and professional training of managers.

Andrea Mariuzzo is Associate professor of History of Education at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. His research interests include the history of universities and higher education, and Euro-American transfers of educational ideas, practices, and personnel. He has recently published La lunga strada per il dottorato. Il dibattito sulla formazione alla ricerca in Italia dal 1923 al 1980 (il Mulino, 2022), and Scuola e politica negli Stati Uniti, 1980-2020 (Brescia, 2022).
