Tra la laguna e il mare: la chiesa e il monastero di San Nicolò del Lido

Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, Auditorium Santa Margherita-Emanuele Severino

26-28 May 2025

International conference

The monastic church of San Nicolò del Lido stands as a symbolic site of the relationship between Venice and the sea, bearing witness to this connection over a span of time from the 11th to the 20th century. This bond is expressed both in daily life and, in ceremonial form, during the annual Festa della Sensa, which, since at least the 11th century, culminated in a liturgical celebration held in the church. The origins of the building date back to 1053, when it was founded by the Bishop of Olivolo and the eponymous Doge Domenico Contarini, in collaboration with the Patriarch of Grado, Domenico Marengo. According to tradition, in 1100 - following intense debate among religious, political, and civil authorities - the church, by then incorporated into a Benedictine monastery, was designated to house the relics of Saint Nicholas, his uncle (also Saint Nicholas), and Saint Theodore. The monastery’s incorporation into the Congregation of Santa Giustina in 1451 marked the beginning of a gradual and systematic transformation of the entire monastic complex. This process led to the dismantling of the medieval church and the construction of a new sacred building between 1627 and 1628. Following the completion of the new church, the earlier structure fell into obscurity until archaeological excavations in the 20th century revealed the area of the original San Nicolò church. Portions of the early building were uncovered, including the central apse and the two lateral apses, along with numerous artifacts - most notably fragments of wall and floor mosaics and various stone elements. Since 2021, these remains have been undergoing maintenance, restoration, and promotion by the Soprintendenza ABAP for Venice and the Lagoon, in partnership with the Istituto Veneto per i Beni Culturali.
