“Woman, life, freedom!” Iran’s protest and future political trajectories

Aula Mazzariol, Malcanton Marcorà (3rd floor) and online

In September 2022, Mahsa Jina Amini, an Iranian Kurdish woman, was arrested by Iran’s morality police for her alleged noncompliance with the country’s Islamic dress code. Three days later, she died in police custody. Amini’s death sparked widespread protests for over 100 days both inside and outside the country. The predominantly women - and youth-led demonstrations under the slogan for “woman, life, liberty” have touched nearly every corner of Iranian society. The protests highlighted how Iranians feel about state oppression, worsening of human rights conditions, struggling economic crisis and the country’s isolation from the international arena. Although the demonstrations didn’t manage to topple down the Iranian government. Yet, this latest round of protests indicated the population’s growing resentment against the ruling elites and a willingness to express it forcefully despite severe government repression.

This event brings into conversation academic experts, civil society groups and Iranian citizens to provide us with critical insights on the latest protests in Iran and their significance in terms of domestic politics, human rights, social equality, and the future of Khamenei’s regime.
