The SSbD 2025 Framework: An overview

Sala conferenze Orio Zanetto - Edificio ALFA | Campus Scientifico

Speaker: Irantzu Garmendia, Project Officer, EC JRC (Ispra)

Abstract:
Key for the Commission’s vision for achieving the green industrial transition is the safe and sustainable by design (SSbD) framework developed by the JRC. The framework integrates safety and sustainability considerations throughout the entire life cycle of chemicals, materials and products, from the beginning to the end of the R&D activities Since its publication in 2022 the SSbD Framework has been tested in different contexts and by different stakeholders with the objective of improving its relevance, reliability and operability. The revised Framework published in December 2025 while keeping the ambition of the 2022 version introduces novel aspects such as the SSbD core principles, the scoping analysis and the SSbD evaluation and documentation, and presents the Framework as an iterative approach supporting innovation.
