Abstract: Born in Paris and graduated from Film University before specializing at Keio University in Tokyo, Koya Kamura began his career in 2007 working for prominent groups such as VIACOM (MTV, GameOne) and, from 2008, at the Walt Disney Company, where he served as Creative Producer and Director, also contributing to the development of the first scripted contents for Disney+. Parallel to his corporate role, he has directed and worked as Artistic Director for global brands including Adidas, L’Oréal, and Redbull.
His fiction debut, the short film Homesick (2019), set in the Fukushima No-go-zone, garnered international acclaim and a nomination for the French Academy Awards César in 2021.
His success was confirmed by his first feature film, Winter in Sokcho, which, following its presentation at international festivals (TIFF in Toronto and SSIFF in San Sebastián 2024), was released in Italy on December 11, 2025. The director is currently developing his second feature film, Évaporés, a dark film noir also set in Fukushima. In this conversation, we will discuss how cinema succeeds in intertwining identity, culture, and social critique.
