Tatiana Kornienko (King’s College London) - Competitive Bidding, Predation, and Expropriation: A Unified Model

Abstract:
This paper introduces expropriation auctions where a single winner acquires the heterogeneous assets of all bidders, net of a fraction of the participants' bidding expenditures. This class of property re-assignment games is incorporated into a unified theoretical framework which accommodates standard winner-pay auctions and the wallet game, allows for transactional frictions, and permits novel applications, including a predation contest and an acquisition of the commons game. Even though the participants' bids may erode the winner's prize, it is shown that a modified revenue equivalence extends to this wider class of competitive situations with endogenous payoffs.
