Agenda
Taiwan at the Crossroads of Political and Geopolitical Change
Sala Video, Camplus S. Marta - Calle Larga S. Marta, 2137, Venezia
Giulio Pugliese (European University Institute)
Introduce: Marco Zappa (Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia)
Taiwan’s industrial comeback in the age of Artificial Intelligence is fuelling economic growth that is the envy of both advanced and developing economies. Yet, Taiwan’s polarized domestic political landscape reflects competing visions of its relation with the People’s Republic of China, with the new KMT leadership’s “pro-peace” stance contrasting with the ruling DPP’s “pro-Taiwan” approach.
This lecture provides an overview of the political factors shaping Taiwan’s international politics, drawing on an in-depth report prepared for the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee. In particular, it examines changes in the international system, with a focus on US-China relations and Japan’s evolving approach to China under the Takaichi government.
