The Cooling Solution - Workshop

Aula Baratto, Ca' Foscari, Dorsoduro 3246, Venezia

In the last century, air-conditioning has established itself as the main, and nearly only intensely advertised strategy to cope with extreme heat in different parts of the globe. The global homogenization of building styles has allowed the proliferation of air-conditioning as the preferred choice to control ambient temperatures during hot seasons, sometimes independently of the outdoor climatic conditions. Billions of people, living on our planet in 2050 and using more energy to moderate harm from climate impacts bear the risk of creating a new, gigantic challenge.

The workshop The Cooling Solution will bring together experts from climate science, epidemiology, economics, anthropology, architecture, and urban planning to discuss: the challenges posed by rising temperatures to human health the implications on energy demand, the environment, and our society the heat adaptation solutions that exist across the world.

The exhibition The Cooling Solution is a scientific project that uses photography to investigate how people of different socioeconomic backgrounds around the world adapt to high temperatures and humidity. It combines scientific findings with personal stories, offering a visual journey through people’s lived experiences of ineffective and inefficient cooling, hypercooling, heat dumping, vernacular architecture, and cutting-edge cooling technologies in Brazil, India, Indonesia, and Italy.
