Unstable Bordering: Chinese Development at Two Nepalese Border Sites

Online lecture series

Unstable bordering: Chinese development at two Nepalese border sites

This presentation will discuss Sino-Nepalese efforts to develop the border sites of Rasuwagadhi and Tatopani. These border points are located in the Himalayas and their infrastructures are subject to frequent natural catastrophes including earthquakes and monsoon-induced floods. For both the Chinese and Nepalese governments, these sites are important for developing trade relationships. They are also chokepoints at which Chinese border forces filter and discipline the Nepali population, the subjects of which may carry undesirable political ideas into Chinese territory. While China has spent enormous amounts of money developing these sites, mutual development at these border sites has been stymied by unexpected natural events and capricious border controls. This project is based on fieldwork undertaken in 2024 and 2025.

Andrew Grant is a human geographer whose research focuses on political geographies of development and humanistic social science.
